About Taima-kazari

Since ancient times, hemp (taima) has played a crucial role in Japanese "prayer" and spiritual practices.
In particular, if you look up the word "taima" in a dictionary, it is defined as "a staff with paper or cloth strips (gohei / nusa) or an amulet (ofuda)."
The purification wands (nusa or harae-gushi) used by Shinto priests for exorcism, the thick ropes (sleeve bells) we shake when visiting a shrine, and the designation of the Grand Shrine's amulet as "Jingū-Taima" (Grand Shrine Hemp) are not merely phonetic substitutions. They stem from a history where actual hemp was used to create the "ofuda-taima" (hemp talismans) and distributed them as spiritual vessels (yorishiro) for the descent of the gods.

However, with the enactment of the Cannabis Control Act (Taima Torishimari Hō), primarily led by the GHQ shortly after the war, the Japanese understanding of "hemp" has largely been replaced by the interpretation of it as a "drug-related plant with pharmacological effects." As a result, the number of people who know the truth about the relationship between prayer and hemp has become extremely limited in today's society.
It is now time for us Japanese people to remember the profound meaning and connection between "Prayer and Hemp."
The wisdom of Japanese hemp connects the visible world (Kenkai) with the invisible world (Yūkai). By purifying and cleansing the excesses of the materialistic world, Taima-kazari will continue to spread as a decorative element for purification (harae) and as a spiritual vessel (yorishiro), fostering a consciousness of "True Alignment" (Matsuri) and creating genuine harmony.

Shinsuke Akita

Since ancient times, hemp has been revered in Shinto ritual — presiding over purification ceremonies and serving as a sacred vessel for divine presence. Devoted to conveying and embodying its spiritual and cultural essence in the modern age, Shinsuke Akita entered the path of Taima-kazari in 2014. His work encompasses the creation of sacred hemp adornments for private homes, salons, and businesses; offerings to shrines and temples; and the crafting of pieces for the Amana-mai sacred dance ceremony.

In 2016, he assumed the role of Head Instructor of the Taima-kazari Artisan Training Program. Operating from his base in Asakusa, he has since brought the program to communities across Japan, cultivating a body of over 1,000 students.

At the heart of his practice lies harae — purification. His path is one of transcending the divisions of duality, holding each polarity in its place while guiding all toward ma-tsuri-ai — true balance — and wa-go — harmony. It is his abiding purpose to carry the ancient wisdom of harae and musubi — the Japanese arts of purification and sacred union — forward into living form through Taima-kazari, and to pass this legacy, alongside the revival of hemp as a vessel of prayer, to the generations that follow.
